What are our rights when we take a boat ?

This page presents briefly what are currently our rights of maritime passenger (any kind of sea or river), as established by the European regulation. We do not present our rights established by the national regulation in a specific country.

Goal of this page is not to make a deep analysis of these rights, but to give a short presentation, in the wide panorama of regulation applied to sustainable mobility, so everyone can better understand their rights. Looking for more details ?

  • Delay : if delay > 60mn : refund of 25% to 50% ticket price, according to delay and initial duration of the travel (for example 25% for 1h delay on a 4h travel). Payment in money or vouchers, to be done within 1 month. Source : Regulation 1177/2010 (art. 19).
  • If delay > 90mn or if travel is cancelled, travellers has the choice between rerouting at the earliest departure, or refund, plus the travel back to departure point if this is relevant. Source : Regulation 1177/2010 (art. 18).
  • Travel cancelled : same dispositions as when delay > 120mn, as described above.
  • Assistance : starting from 90mn delay : snack, meal, accomodation, as needed, if available, for a maximum of 3 nights at 80 euro each. Source : Regulation 1177/2010 (art 17).
  • Information : if case of delay or cancellation : information to passengers as soon as possible about the situation, not later than 30mn after planned departure, and information about possible alternative correspondance, if a correspondance has been missed, plus information in a way accessible to persons with a reduced mobility.
